Sands of the Seven

Sands of the Seven is a long-term series of museum-scale classical oil paintings on the founding vision and cultural identity of the United Arab Emirates. Rather than documenting historical events, the paintings reinterpret them through allegory and symbolic realism — Baroque technique, Renaissance composition, images constructed to carry an idea rather than record a photograph. The sands stand for land, memory, and the passage of time; the seven for the seven Emirates, and for the weight that number carries across Arab and Islamic culture. The series is neither documentary history nor commemoration: it is mythology built from reality.

Works from the series were exhibited at ADIHEX and Made in Tashkeel in 2024, and covered in the UAE press between 2020 and 2022 under the earlier working title, Future Heritage. It remains in development as a lifelong body of work; the current practice grew directly out of its discipline.

The origin of the series — the moment before history changes. Less a portrait than an allegory of foresight: the ability to see what does not yet exist, and the patience and responsibility of building toward it. The atmosphere is contemplative rather than triumphant; the painting depicts the beginning of an idea, not its success.

Where Zayed's Vision imagines, The Achievement realizes. The vision has become reality — a painting about perseverance, execution, and collective effort rather than wealth or spectacle. If the first painting asks whether it can be imagined, this one answers: it was built.
